Although the emphasis was on the friendly and social side, Boston are none the less always competitive and the bigger club are usually able to produce a fairly strong team.

But on this occasion the Sleaford team, led by captain Helen Quirke, were up to the task and produced a 120-88 victory, winning on five out of six rinks.

Terry Curran’s set of David Chambers, Barbara Clarke and Alan Horne started strongly, taking a six point lead which the opposition clawed back to go ahead 10-17, before the home set rallied to run out 22-18 winners, scoring 12 shots over the last five ends. Helen Quirke supported by Eileen Chambers, Mike Goate and Sylvia Goate were engaged in a close match in which neither team dominated but the Sleaford set finished with four shots on the last end to win 21-15.

Steve Traynor joined by Elaine Traynor, Norman Stock and Lorraine Falkingham were always chasing the Boston set to no avail, losing 11-15. Terry Wallis had Ken Searle, Barbara Polley and Lilian Searle giving a solid performance to win 25-15 which on another day would have given them the winning rink prize.

Keith Richards’s team of Diane Watson, Carol Wallis and Rose Clapton were neck and neck with the opposition until the 18th end, then picked up six shots over the next two ends to win 20-15. Pauline Hansen’s set of Betty Bowyer, Yvonne Paul and Andrew Morris were Sleaford’s winning rink of the day, on countback with a superb 21-10 victory and solid, consistent bowling.
