Boston boxing hero Callum proud to have street named after him on estate he grew up on

The light heavyweight, who was Commonwealth champion in 2016 and British light-heavyweight champion in 2018, attended a special naming ceremony for the street.

"Callum Johnson Close" is part of a new housing development on the West Fenside Estate. This development was due for completion in March this year but was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

His name was put forward by Boston Mayor Coun Anton Dani after he was asked to nominate someone by the developers.

Coun Dani, ward member for Fenside, said: "Callum is born and bred in Boston, he is a great example of a young man who proved that if you want to achieve anything in your life you can by hard work and determination.”

Callum said: "I’ve been lucky enough in my time to achieve some great things and see some amazing places and meet and mix with a lot of high profile people.

"Nothing really fazes me or I don’t really think too much about a lot of things and maybe take a lot of things for granted.

"But I can honestly say I’m actually very happy, very proud and very honoured to have a street named after me on the estate where I grew up that will be there for generations to come long after I’ve gone to rest."

Coun Dani said: “I had the pleasure of meeting him a few years ago at his sponsor’s place Mr Zaheed Younis (the owner of Acorn Taxis) and I was overwhelmed by his down to earth personality and manners.

“Being a keen boxing supporter, I started following his progress and I was amazed how far he went to represent Boston.

"Therefore, when I was approached to nominate a candidate who deserves to have a street named after them, in my Ward Fenside of a new development, I could not think of a better person than Callum 'The One' Johnson.”

The affordable housing developers are Platform Housing Ltd working with contractors D Brown Building Contractors Ltd in partnership with Homes England and Boston Borough Council.

Site manager for D Brown Building Contractors, Darrell Tripp, said: "It is really a privilege to be involved in this development and many others throughout the town.

"Callum is an idol to so many of our residents and we hope that this naming will strengthen the memories in years to come of Callum and his amazing sporting career."
