Dinnington boxers will hunt for a title

A DINNINGTON boxing club are targeting a title next season, after their first full competitive campaign.

Fighting Fit gym, based at Throapham, finished the season with four fighters in action at a show in Nottingham.

Marcus Weston, formerly a semi-professional footballer with Dinnington Town, reached the semi-finals of a light middleweight ‘Prizefighter’ tournament, while a trio of his team-mates were also representing the club.

Coach Mike White told the Guardian: “Marcus won his first fight by knockout in the second round, and in the semi-finals he lost to the eventual tournament winner.”

“We also had Darren Snow fighting, Jamie Fisher won his heavyweight fight on points, despite giving away three stone in weight, and Oli Pau lost on a split decision.”

“That fight could have gone either way, he was up against a local favourite.”

White says he is proud of the club’s first efforts in the ring: “We had a good season, to say it was our first.”

“The lads did quite well, there was a mixed bag of results but we gave a good account of ourselves.”

And he’s hoping the momentum will carry through to next season, with the fighters getting back into serious training in September.

“We’re looking for some sort of title next season,” he said.

“We’ve got a couple of good little lads coming through, they’re taking shape.”
