Hat-trick of wins for tiny Thai fighters

MALTBY Thai Boxing Club celebrated a hat-trick of wins in Manchester at the weekend, at the Celtic Championship Challenge.

Three local kids benefitted from hard work in training to secure wins on the show, which attracts the best junior fighters from all over the country.

Josh Swift had a late change in opponent, taking on a Scottish youngster over five rounds.

The Maltby 10-year-old’s workrate in the final three rounds impressed the judges sufficiently to take a unanimous decision.

Owen Tomlinson, 11, was up next, hoping to make up for defeat in his previous bout.

The fight began with a furious exchange of kicks between the fighters, but Tomlinson scored points with body kicks and had his opponent off balance more than once, again taking a judges’ decision.

Ewan Hickling entered the ring hoping to make it a trio of wins to cap a fine night for the Maltby club, as he took on a home town fighter.

Despite just returning from holiday, Hickling’s work in the clinch kept him on top and his hand was raised after five tough rounds.

Maltby coach Phil Glover told the Guardian the youngsters’ dedication in the gym had underpinned the victories.

“I have been pushing everyone really hard at the club lately including the kids, and all that hard training has paid off,” he said.

“This was a brilliant result for the Maltby team, I was very proud of them Saturday”
