The heavyweight has been called up to represent England in a home nations tournament, facing familiar foe Sam Leyson.

Welshman Leyson, who has beaten Pogson twice in the past, most recently in Skegness last month, will be representing Great Britain in the bout at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport.

“When my coaches first told me I’d been called up I thought it was a joke,” Pogson confessed.

“But I’m buzzing to represent my country.

“I’ve always wanted to do it.”

Pogson’s cousin Callum Johnson, who is preparing to fight for the European Light Heavyweight title, represented Scotland in the amateurs, leaving Pogson to follow in the footsteps of Boston’s former England fighter Joe Dawson.

After suffering two defeats to Leyson, Pogson, who is preparing for GB trials later this month, is gunning for revenge.

“We know a lot about each other now, and I don’t think there’s a lot between us,” he said.

“It’s going to be a good fight.”
