Callum Johnson admits he is more than ready to overcome some difficult hurdles to become European champion.

The Boston light heavyweight wants to add the continent’s top title to his CV, after previously winning the British and Commonwealth belts as a professional.

Johnson, 34, will meet Russia’s Igor Mikhalkin in the new year, the victor claiming the vacant title. “He’s no mug,” Johnson said of his 34-year-old opponent-to-be.

“He’s a southpaw, which is something I’ve got to deal with.

“You don’t get to fight for a European title unless you’re a top fighter.

“But, if I’m being honest, I don’t think he can stand to me.

“I’ve watched videos of his fights and I honestly believe I’m too strong for him.”

Although a date and venue for the bout is yet to be agreed, Johnson said he wouldn’t rule out bcoming a real-life Rocky and fighting the Russian in his own back yard.

“Why not?” he added. “I’m up for any challenge.”
