They all but ensured promotion out of the Yorkshire Premier League when they drew at Leeds, but their easy demolition of the Sheffield club ensured the Brigg were going up.

They can become champions this Saturday if they win the local derby at Grimsby which is the final game of their league season.

Grimsby are likely to make a fight of it as they need points to avoid relegation at the other end of the table. The match starts at Grimsby Institute at noon.

Zac Meadows was the star of Brigg’s 6-1 win with four goals, the others being added by Danny Clay and Andy Dixon.

* Brigg men’s third team also secured promotion in Division Five South when they beat Lindum 6-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Joe Hastings.

The Second XI also won 3-1 away to Acomb and still have an outside chance of promotion, while the men’s fourth team are already assured of the Division Six championship and promotion, capping a magnificent campaign for all four sides.

* Brigg ladies’ First XI had an excellent win 6-1 win over Chapeltown, goals coming from Lois Haigh (2), Jackie Balmer (2), Corinne Maddy and Helena Palin.

The ladies’ second team lost 4-1 at Chapeltown, but remain close to the top of the Yorkshire League Division One and are outsiders for promotion.
