Carr Hill girl is home first

KINGS Park, Retford, played host to the annual Bassetlaw Schools Y5/6 Cross Country final on 10th October, with over 130 kids from 15 schools taking part.

The event, delivered by Bassetlaw Council’s Sports Development Service was won by Madison Metcalf (Girls, Carr Hill Primary) and Samuel Roberts. (Boys, St Mary and St Martin Primary, Blyth).

Sam Harrison, a Badminton Junior National Champion, was the hare for the race, with stewarding and marshalling provided by volunteers from the Elizabethan Academy and local Sports Leaders.

Girls: Madison Metcalf (Carr Hill) 4:03:51; Jessica Hooley (Ryton Park Primary) 4:10:40; Leah Sinnot (Ryton Park Primary) 4:16:14.

Boys: Samuel Roberts (St Mary and St Martin Primary) 3:26:84; Cameron Harper (Sir Edmund Hillary) 3:45:19; Tom McIntosh (Redlands) 3:48:19.

Coun Julie Leigh, portfolio holder for environment and leisure said: “It is great to see so many young people involved in distance running and competing in the cross country final.”

“This summer we saw some fantastic performances by Mo Farrah in the Olympics and I hope this inspires young people to get more involved in sport.”

Brett Frost, Sports Development Officer at Bassetlaw District Council added his delight with the performances on the day.

He said: “The race was very impressive.”

“The children put a lot of effort in and I’d like to congratulate everyone that took part and wish them all the best in their future sporting endeavours.”
