Chess success for school's youngsters

Four youngsters from Parish Church Primary School in Gainsborough are eyeing places at the finals of the British Chess Championships after success at the South Yorkshire event.

Parish took a team of eight to the tournament, which was held in Sheffield, and enjoyed record-breaking success.

Max Kwant was the highest-scoring boy in year two, while Levi Coombe was the highest-scoring girl in year three and Naomi Kwant the top year-five girl. The champion girl in year six also hailed from Parish.

On top of that, runners-up spots were secured by Lucy Hunt in the U11s’ section, Daisy Aird in the U10s’ section and Jake Warner in the U11s’ category.

The four champions will now take part in the Midlands finals in Birmingham, the last step before the national finals. One of them, Levi, said: “I have only started playing chess at school this year, but I am really enjoying it. I never dreamed I would win a competition like this. I am very nervous about going to Birmingham, but I will do my best.”

The school chose its team after staging its own annual championships during lunchtimes over a period of seven weeks. The overall champion was Naomi Kwant, who won all seven of her games, including one against her younger brother, Max.

The competition was organised by teacher John Anderson, who believes chess is an important game for children to learn.
