Nottingham Moderns 5

Boston Rugby Club ended their losing run with a vital five-point win in this bottom-of-the-table clash against Nottingham Moderns.

The win gave the club a much-needed confidence boost and, in the process, moved the team to ninth place in the Midlands 3 East (North).

The side welcomed back two first team regulars, centre Jake Brooks returning after a lengthy time off due to injury, and prop Joe Deamer, both starting on the bench.

Playing against the wind, the visitors were fielding their strongest side for some time, taking the game to the home side, whose defence proved equal to the task.

Boston were looking to use their off loading game to keep the ball moving and create space for the backs.

It would be on 16 minutes when winger Jarron Cowern scored the first of his three tries, giving the Blue and Whites a vital lead.

Centre Tom Andrews seized upon a loose kick and made the initial break through the middle of the park.

The move was kept alive by number eight Jack Stokes, who then off-loaded to Jarron to finish off inside the Nottingham 22.

Having just caught his breath, Cowern would score minutes later, when the referee allowed an advantage in loose play, due to a Nottingham knock on to run from inside his half to move Boston 10-0 ahead.

A lapse in defence just before half time would see Nottingham score a try to reduce the deficit to 10-5.

For the start of the second half, Callum Lawson replaced Marc Miles and Jake Brooks came on for Ben Woollaston.

It would take only four minutes for the team to score as centre Tom Andrews collected a loose ball outside the 22 to sprint clear, the conversion by Dan Halliday extended the lead to 17-5.

The crucial fourth try and bonus point, saw Cowern secure his hat trick as slick handling saw the ball spun wide.

Full back Woollaston added the final coup de grace to record their fifth try, converted by Halliday to end the match on a high.

On Saturday the side travel to play Ashby (KO 2.15pm).
