CRICKET: Revesby consolidate second place at Scothern

Revesby lost the toss and were put into back and the decision seemed justified, despite the warm weather, as the Scothern opening attack of James Drabble and A. Stapleton soon reduced the visitors to 22-2. This soon became 46-4 inside 13 overs as the innings looked like it could potentially fall apart.

Thankfully, M. Twells, batting at four, and with the useful support of middle order contributions from R. Knight (21) and M. Ridding (11), started to expand his stroke play after a cautious start and spread the field with a range of cover drives and pull shots. The score moved towards a more respectable figure of 126-6 with a further 10 overs remaining and only four wickets in hand.

M. Twells passed his 50 and then accelerated towards a well-deserved and entertaining first century of the season in the final over of the innings, fittingly reached with a six to the mid-wicket boundary.

He finished on an unbeaten 106, which included 17 fours and one six, from just 122 balls. His outstanding knock helped propel the score to 188-8 from the 40 overs and make it look far more competitive than it had looked earlier in the proceedings.

Top bowling figures for Scothern were achieved by A. Stapleton with an impressive 3-47 off nine overs and T. Cliffe who finished with 2-39 off eight.

In reply, the Scothern openers set about the target of 189 in positive fashion, until W. Bailey was bowled by J. Lewis for nine in only the second over. J. Lawson then added a further 12 runs before he was brilliantly caught in the deep by L. Odlin, to give J. Lewis his second wicket of the game, and leave Scothern on 28-2.

A further 47 runs were added for the third wicket before T. Cliffe (14) edged M. Ridding behind, and this was quickly followed by S. Bailey being bowled by the same bowler in his next over. M. Ridding finished with solid figures of 2-21 off eight overs.

Despite L. Odlin’s earlier fine catch, Revesby’s overall outfield catching was somewhat below par and four catches were shelled, three of them coming off the unlucky D. Hunt, with J. Drabble being the main beneficiary. He eventually fell for a well worked and patient 46, when R. Knight joined the attack and managed to get one through his defences.

Scothern’s run rate continued to increase and both R. Knight and J. Bishop finished the innings off inside 39 overs, both taking three wickets apiece, as the Scothern innings ended on 117, a defeat by 71 runs. The hosts picked up five bonus points and Revesby’s maximum return saw them consolidate their position in second place.
