Lea Park survival hopes suffer big blow after 10-wicket loss to Thoresby Colliery

Lea Park 108 all out

Thorseby Colliery II 109 for 0

Lea Park are in serious danger of relegation following an emphatic 10-wicket defeat away to Thorseby Colliery.

The disappointing result leaves them second from bottom and, while Lea has the ability to beat any team in the division on their day, there have been too few of these days so far this season.

With only a handful of games to go Lea must hope that players are available to field a strong enough team to avoid the drop.

Lea batted first and Andy Orton and Chris Needham got them off to a flying start with one opening bowler being knocked out the attack before Orton (13) was caught behind with the score 58-1.

Needham was next out for 38 with the score on 69 after he played on to an innocuous delivery from Nigel Birkett and despite Dave Patterson batting well for 14 Lea were all out for a disappointing 108.

Birkett with 6-30 and fellow slow bowler Norman Garden 3-20 off 13-overs did the damage but tentative batting from Lea allowed these figures to be recorded, as the bowling was absolutely their for the taking.

A lack of confidence and application meant this did not happen.

In reply, Needham and Ben Alsop created chances early on in Thoresby’s innings but none were taken.

Defending a score of 108 at Thorseby was always going to be an uphill battle if chances weren’t taken and wickets were not taken early.

With no luck going Lea’s way the introduction of Andy Slater and Kyle Crawford also created half chances, but with the batsmen set and hitting the ball cleanly 108 was knocked off without a single wicket falling.

Ian Halfpenny ended 47 not out and Taylor Wright brought up victory and his 50 not out with a sweep to the boundary in the 25th over.

At Fourth Avenue: LEA PARK (0) 108 all out (Chris Needham 38, Norman Garden 3 for 20, Nigel Birkett 6 for 31) lost to THORESBY COLLIERY 2nd (20) 109 for 0 (Ian Halfpenny 47 n.o., Taylor Wright 50 n.o.) by ten wickets.
