Marshalls beat the weather and visitors

It was a close run thing in the end, as just 22 runs separated the sides, but Marytn Snell’s knock of 38 saw Marshalls to victory.

Marshalls skipper Plumtree lost the toss and was invited to bat, and although Whitlam and Snell opened for the Gainsborough side, with the score on 22 for 0 after eight overs the sides were taken off by the umpires.

After an hour delay and tea taken early, Marshalls resumed with the bat, Whitlam and Snell both taking runs when they could.

Whitlam (15) was then caught well at backward point, and Metcalfe (4) edged to a Clumber fielder.

Plumtree then came to the crease and began to build a good partnership with Snell.

In last 15 overs Snell tried to move the scoreboard on but was bowled for a well grafted 38.

The in-form Favill then joined the skipper and some excellent running between the wickets and a couple of boundaries by Favill kept the score moving on well, before Plumtree (23) was caught and bowled.

Favill (14) followed Plumtree back into the pavilion, and this brought club veteran Kev Metcalfe and debutant Mark Raisborough to the crease and the pair batted well to finish with 11 and three not out respectively, Marshalls on 113 for 5 at the close of play.

After a quick turnaround Arulanathan and Plumtree opened the bowling.

It was Arulanathan who stepped up and bowled a terrific opening burst, seaming the ball both ways, taking 2 for 15 within his five over spell.

Ridler replaced Plumtree with his medium pace and also also took two quick wickets for 15 runs.

The slow bowling of Snell kept the overs tight which brought pressure to the batsmen, who started to try and hit out, but this only resulted in wickets for the Gainsborough side.

Fifteen-year-old Raisborough then replaced Ridler and showed his great potential in taking a wicket in only his second over of the day.

Plumtree (1 for 27) bought himself on at the death and claimed his first wicket of the day.

But it was Snell who wrapped up the remaining batsmen, finishing with figures of 4 wickets for 20 from his 10 overs.

It was a superb win from a young Marshalls side, whose local youngsters are holding their own in their first season of senior cricket.

This weekend Marshalls travel to Anston on Saturday and then host Brocklesby Park CC from the Yorkshire Alliance League on 1st September, at 1pm at Middlefield Lane.
