Woodhall Spa build on Cup win with first League victory

Fresh from their Winkworth Cup success, Woodhall Spa finally claimed their first win of the Lincolnshire Premier Cricket League season with victory over Burghley Park on Saturday.

Playing at Jubilee Park, the visitors looked comfortable as, having lost a wicket on 60, Ryan Gilmour and James Laud took the score to 176.

However, Alex King dismissed both and went on to take two more wickets and Burghley found themselves 191-5.

Toby Wheatley then took over with the ball and claimed the other five wickets to bowl Burghley out for 218.

Woodhall’s inning faltered right from the start as a run-out and two early wickets saw them 25-3 and looking at their sixth league defeat in succession.

But the cavalry arrived in the shape of Ollie Caswell and Tayyab Tahir, who halted the collapse. Tahir won the race to 50, followed by his partner three balls later, and by the time Caswell was out for 70, just 38 runs were needed for victory.

Now partnered by Prasanna Jayawardene, Tahir went on to make an unbeaten 122 off 100 balls as a jubilant Woodhall side celebrated a much-needed victory.
