Woodhall Spa’s Paul Hutchinson, from Velo One racing team, started in the scratch group in a field of 60 riders for the five lap race.

It was fast paced from the beginning with lots of attacks and counter-attacks, but the scratch group made steady progress and, as they heard the bell, they caught the combined groups four and five.

As the last lap progressed, the combined groups one, two and three could be seen and the chasers were closing them down, eventually catching them with 800m to go as the racers started the last drag to the finish.

The riders were lined out with Paul in seventh wheel, and with 200m to go he launched his attack to get to the head of the field. But Paul couldn’t hold off all of the others and Gavin Sykes squeezed into the lead just before the line. Paul finished second in the group and third overall in the race.

The race was won by Stephanie King from group one who launched an attack from the start and completed a brave solo effort to take the overall win.
