Dinnington beat York in ‘dour’ affair

DINNINGTON recorded their second league victory of the season on Saturday in a dour encounter at home to York.

Although they still remain third from bottom they closed the gap to several teams above them with a 6-3 win.

York had the early pressure, as they pinned Dinnington in their own half from the kick-off, and took the lead with a penalty after five minutes.

Dinnington came straight back and, after a similar period of pressure, levelled the scores through the boot of Chris Williams.

Play then became nip and tuck with neither side creating any clear-cut chances although York did miss a couple of penalties.

A melee between the two sets of forwards proved to be the most exciting bit of action in the half as the score remained 3-3 up to the break.

York turned round with the elements in their favour but, as several other teams have found previously, Dinnington are very resilient when faced with this challenge.

Once again there were no clear try scoring opportunities as the sides cancelled each other out.

Midway through the half, York had a player sin-binned for persistent infringements and Williams put Dinnington ahead with a penalty.

He missed with another attempt soon after and with York missing with other attempts themselves the game remained in the balance.

York did have several lineouts in the Dinnington half but each time the home side cleared their lines comfortably.

In the last minute, York were awarded a penalty near to touch but instead of chancing the kick they opted to go for the lineout.

However, Dinnington won possession again and, after an attempt to run out of their own half was halted, they cleared to touch to win the game.

Next Saturday Dinnington travel to Pontefract.
