District cross country kids show off skills

The Bassetlaw Schools Sports Association’s cross country championships at Worksop College showcased the running talents of the area’s youngsters.

Over the six races that were staged, there were over 300 athletes from across nine different schools that competed.

Elizabethan, Tuxford, Retford Oaks, Valley, Portland and Serlby Park Acadamies did battle with the independent schools including Ranby House, Orchard and Worksop College.

For each race the top 12 athletes to finish received an invite to run and compete for Bassetlaw in the Notts Schools Cross Country Championships on 1st February 2014 in Sutton in Ashfield.

The top three finishers in each race were as follows.

Year 7 Girls: 1st M. Spink (Tuxford), 2nd A. Gull (Orchard), 3rd M. Metcalfe (Elizabethan).

Year 7 Boys: 1st S. Roberts (Tuxford), 2nd C. Furniss (Ranby House), 3rd L. Scott (Portland).

Year 8/9 Girls: 1st A. Scott (Tuxford), 2nd M. Scott (Tuxford), 3rd C. Thorman (Worksop College).

Year 8/9 Boys: 1st N. Langley (Valley), 2nd J. Charters (Elizabethan), 3rd M. Overton (Retford Oaks).

Year 10/11 Girls: 1st M. Hunt (Elizabethan), 2nd S. Oakes (Portland), 3rd K. Whelan (Tuxford).

Year 10/11 Boys: 1st O. Dane (Worksop College), 2nd M. Gains (Retford Oaks), 3rd J. Bacon (Tuxford).

The performance of the afternoon came from Oliver Dane in the Boys Year 10/11 race, who won his race by almost two minutes.

Tony Wright from Bassetlaw Council’s sports development team commented: “The district schools cross country championships is always a great event to be involved because it is the only event in the schools’ sporting calendar that brings all nine secondary schools together to compete against each other.”

“We have deliberately staged our district races early this year, and so we can organise a couple of squad training sessions for the athletes that have qualified to compete in February.”
