Skelly was in Kalkar representing the GB age group team, having qualified for the event by winning the British Championship held at Clumber Park in Nottingham.

The European event consisted of a 10k run, 40k bike, 5k run for the standard distance race Skelly took part in, with a sprint distance race held later that same day over half the distances.

Skelly’s race was four lap run a four lap bike and a two lap run which gave plenty of opportunity to assess the competition during the race.

He came around the first run in third overall position in 33.57 with a comfortable gap to his 20-24 male age group competitors, who he would be racing against for medal positions.

Onto a flat and windy bike course, the field soon started to move positions but Skelly came around the 40k having gained time on a vast percentage of riders with a 1:00:34 second bike split.

Despite not being in the greatest form after a struggle through the winter with an injury, Skelly managed to once again post the third fastest run split of the day with a 17.48.

Skelly said: “A big thanks has to go to my employer Lincs Electrical & Plumbing Engineers, and the Gainsborough Sporting Club for sponsorship towards this event, as well as my family and friends for supporting me towards achieving my goals.”
