Emma wins first race in Phil Rose series

The competition is named in honour of member Phil Rose who died tragically in a road accident some 20 years ago.

Some current members ran with Phil and see the series as a fitting tribute to their old clubmate.

Run under a handicap system, race one was convincingly won by young Emma Robinson who beat her predicted time by over five minutes and her nearest challenger, the equally improving Craig Ward, by just under a minute and a half.

New members Mark Cutts, Mick Wood and Christian Brown also performed impressively to round out the first five finishers.

With 12 qualifying races in total, including the Lincoln, Doncaster and Woodhall Spa 10ks after which Craig Ward was series leader, the six home legs will prove to be crucial in deciding where the title will fall.

With such a strong performance in race one, Emma Robinson was favourite to take the race two crown and prize money.

But an adjusted handicap time and challenging conditions saw her narrowly beaten into second by series debutant Hilary Cooke, who bagged the first place and associated 25 points with a committed performance that promises much for the future.

Mick Wood climbed a place to finish third and was followed shortly by Graham Gilbert and 2011 champion Shaun Boyle in fourth and fifth places, respectively.

MARSHALLS U16s are looking for new players for the coming season.

The club intends to run a squad of 15 or so where everyone will get a game each week. Training goes on through July on a Tuesday at 6.30pm on Marshalls sports field.

THERE was just one winner of the latest Gainsborough Trinity weekly letter draw who won the £200 payout when the letters F, V and O were drawn last Thursday night.

The snowball letter was L and that prize now stands at £475.
