Experience pays off in tennis club league clash

The youngsters competing for Boston A - Joseph Parla, George Wookey, Matthew Cheer and Harry Foster - could not match the know-how of the Boston B team’s Calum McCaig, Rachel Gedney, John Gibson and Andy Clamp, the B securing a 4-0 win.

In the Lincolnshire Slazenger Winter Seniors League, both the Boston Tennis Club Men’s and Ladies’ Third teams played matches at the weekend.

Spalding Men and Grantham Ladies’ B team were the opposition.

There was good news and bad news for the Ladies in this home fixture against Grantham B.

The bad news was that the team of Denise Priestley, Laura Ray, Helen Cook and Helen Duckett missed out 2-6, halving two of the rubbers.

On the bright side, the team finished as runners-up in the third division, and in doing so, have been promoted to Division Two.

The men’s Thirds travelled to Spalding.

It was a close match for the team of Sev Smura, Henry Cheer, Jeremy George-Jones and Richard Walker, who earned a 2-2 draw.

They had an opportunity to get a win which was missed when a tie-break went Spalding’s way.

Boston Tennis Club teams are looking ahead a few weeks to the start of the spring season and the Aegon Team Tennis.

With the Men’s and Ladies’ sides both competing in the Regional Division, the prospects are exciting.

Both teams begin with a home match on April 3.

The Men will host Derbyshire Tennis Club and the Ladies will be against Leicester’s Charnwood.

For the Men, the opposition will be Northampton, Loughborough and Kibworth, along with Grantham and Lutterworth.

The Ladies will also face West Bridgford, Leicestershire LTC and Ashby Castle.

The Girls’ 14 and under and 12 and under age groups have both gained a place in the Premier Division of the Midland tiers.
