Familiar ring as Dinnington slide to home defeat

YORKSHIRE ONE

Heath 14

TWO games in and Dinnington already have a feeling of deja-vu.

Last season they started their league campaign with five straight defeats, gaining four losing bonus points, and this second defeat of the season, against Heath, had a familiar ring to it.

The two sides met at Dinnington on the last day of last season when the home side ran out winners, and for much of this game Dinnington looked the more likely to win.

They had first use of the elements, a very strong wind, and started well.

Chris Williams kicked them into a 3-0 lead from an early penalty.

But when Dinnington knocked-on on half way Heath reacted quickly to claim a converted try.

Dinnington responded by coming back strongly and spent a long period in the visitor’s 22 but again they failed to get over the line.

They managed to keep the pressure on even when down to fourteen men following a sin binning but could only add another Williams’ penalty to their score to trail 7-6 at the break.

Dinnington defied the elements in the second half to prevent Heath from building on their lead.

The visitors used the wind to peg the home side back but they responded with some good running rugby to keep play up close to halfway.

After holding their own for 20 minutes, Dinnington regained the lead when a break by Will Marshall was halted just short and Mark Pinder was on hand to finish off close to the posts.

Williams added the conversion to put Dinnington 13-7 ahead.

The hosts appeared comfortable but with 10 minutes to go another yellow card put them a man short and an injury forced uncontested scrums.

Heath took advantage to put the pressure on and in the final minute they managed to get over in the corner leaving a tricky conversion in the wind.

As the kicker stepped up the wind dropped and the ball went over.

Dinnington still had time to respond and they won a penalty just outside kicking range.

They chose to rumble it forward to set up a drop goal attempt but it went wide and the game ended.

Tomorrow Dinnington travel to Driffield.

The seconds were beaten 20-10 at their Market Rasen counterparts, their tries coming from Anthony Lavin and Guy french.

It was a great day for the thirds however, as they thrashed Rotherham Phoenix at home.

Tries in the 49-0 win came from James Cornelius, Josh Brown (3), Brett Meese, Anthony Law, Richard White, Chris Law and Ben Dimbleby.
