Bassetlaw Boys claim county title

Bassetlaw Boys claimed another County Championship for the district at Sutton-in-Ashfield when they won the Inter District Seven-a-side title.

In what had been a headache week for manager, Alan Pressley, as he continually had to re-arrange his two squads in his mind as key players withdrew, Bassetlaw finally kicked off with just 15 fit players for the two squads.

First of the key moments came in the first set of games when a Regan Watkinson goal was enough to beat the City of Nottingham B squad while an Alex Bennett goal saw the Bassetlaw B squad take vital points from the holders, City of Nottingham A.

Nottingham continued to play out a series of draws, including the match against their own B squad while the contest between the two Bassetlaw squads ended in a 2-1 victory for the A team, with goals from Kieron Hooley and Regan Watkinson just enough to clinch the points in spite of a strong fight back from the B team urged on by Curtis Toulson and aided by a goal from Alex Bennett.

This left Bassetlaw in an unassailable position with a match still remaining as newcomers Newark Boys also took points from the top two teams.

Bassetlaw will now represent Nottinghamshire in the ESFA Tesco Midlands Counties Finals in Nottingham in March when they will be playing for a place in the National Finals.

On Saturday Bassetlaw travel to Scarborough for a Green’Un Cup tie, leaving the Worksop Priory Car Park at 8am prompt.
