Battling Horncastle win a thriller

Player interim-manager Lewis Burchnall praised Horncastle Town’s second-half display as the Wongers saw off hosts Sleaford Town Reserves on Saturday.

Having been 2-0 down at half-time, Sleaford scored three quick goals to turn things around and eventually run out 4-3 winners, Alfie Vickers scoring twice with Scott Lowman’s penalty and a Liam Cotton strike also finding the net.

And coming after Horncastle had seen their midweek game with Barton Town Reserves postponed not long before kick-off, goalkeeper Burchnall was pleased to return to action with a win.

He said: “We got an unexpected rest on Wednesday night when we were warming up to play Barton and one of the floodlights wouldn’t come on. It’s the first time that’s happened for over ten years so just one of those things, although typical that the lights let us down two months before we replace them this summer.

"We have managed to get them fixed so our evening matches in April can still go ahead as scheduled.

“At Sleaford we started really well and it looked like a matter of time before we took the lead, but instead found ourselves 2-0 down at half time through our own mistakes.

"We still believed we could turn it around and needed a big second-half performance to get out of trouble. Within 20 minutes we were leading 3-2 so really showed the fight and quality we have in the team.

“We had a depleted squad due to illness and injury but the lads dug in and it was an opportunity to give debuts to promising young players James Thomsett and Callum Masson, who both came on and helped us see out the win.

“We’ve finally got a free midweek coming up so we’ll use that time to recover and be ready to take on Louth Town Reserves in the Supplementary Cup quarter-final on Saturday.”
