Boston United promotion-winning midfielder Richards relieved to achieve third season at National League level

Boston United midfielder Jordan Richards said it was a relief to ensure survival in the National League after Monday's 1-1 draw at Brackley Town.

It wasn't the best of displays on the day from the Pilgrims but proved enough to secure a third season at that level and Richards, one of four survivors from the promotion-winning side of 2024, said: “It was a massive point as you can never really be sure of safety, so you just make you do what you've got to do.

“You want it to be in your hands instead of other teams.

“It means a lot. It means a lot to the fans and everyone involved in the club.

“We want to keep progressing each season.

“Performances like that at Brackley don't help, but I am sure we will get things ticking over.

“It could be back to back relegations for Morecambe, so you never know when it's your time.

“So we want to keep the momentum going and push on next season.”

It took a Lenell John-Lewis spot kick to rescue a point at Brackley and Richards said: “We did what we wanted to do and stayed in the league, but the last couple of weeks have not been good enough.

“Even though we have stayed up it's a bit sour that we put on a performance like that.

“Going behind was something we could have avoided.

“I think we could have used the ball a lot better so we were out of sight before they even scored.

“We should have been more confident going into the game and taken it to them.

“But we showed a bit of fight in the end and it was a good penalty from Lenell, which eased our nerves a bit.”

Boston next host relegated Truro City on Saturday and Richards said: “I suppose we can go out and play with a bit more freedom now, but we stil have ways of how we want to play.

“The gaffer will be implementing stuff and thinking who he should play or not play.

“He won't be making it seem like we are on our holidays or anything like that.

“We are still aiming for a good mid-table finish.”
