Frank Mulhern said it was a ‘great feeling’ winning the National League North title last season. Now he wants more of the same with Boston United.

The striker was part of the Stockport County squad which pipped Chorley to top spot by one point last season.

Now, after arriving at York Street on loan from the Hatters until the end of the campaign, the bullish 22-year-old is refusing to rule out the Pilgrims pulling off a surprise title charge.

Saturday’s 3-1 victory over York City saw the Pilgrims pull themselves to within seven points of leaders King’s Lynn.

While things change quickly in this division, Mulhern believes there could be plenty more plot twists - and he says Craig Elliott’s current Boston squad have all the ingredients necessary to keep their nerve in the final months of the season.

“It’s a great feeling to win the league,” Mulhern said.

“All it takes is togetherness and everyone doing their jobs. Nailed on.

“That’s what we’ve got here and because of that we’ve got a really good chance.

“It is similar to last season. The manager knows what he wants from all of us and we’re doing what he says on the pitch. It’s going well.”

While finding himself involved with the County team this season, Mulhern wasn’t getting the minutes he wanted in the National League.

When Boston showed an interest, the former Leeds United trainee felt the move would be right to suit his ambitions.

“When I came in I knew six or seven lads here,” Mulhern added. “I knew they were top players who had played in the Conference before.

“I knew when I came here we’d have a real chance of going up.

“We’re going to see how that goes. I’m more than happy to stay here. I love football so if I’m starting every week then that’s what I want to be doing.”

Never far from the thick of the action, Mulhern’s goal was a major talking point following Saturday’s win against the Minstermen.

It was a bizarre finish which brought Boston level before half time.

After charging into the box and preparing to shoot, a bobble saw the ball strike his shin and loop over stranded City keeper Peter Jameson.

“I didn’t have a clue what happened,” he said.

“I think I must’ve kicked it three times and it’s gone in the back of the net. I looked at the ground and looked over there and it’s dropped in the net, I couldn’t believe it.

“The lucky ones are the best ones and I’ll take them until the end of the season.

“I don’t want to stop scoring. That’s my job at the end of the day, and the more I score the more chance I have of playing.”
