Boys dominate but lose out to late strike

SCHOOLBOY FOOTBALL

GAINSBOROUGH lost to a goal two minutes from time, in a game they should have had sewn up by the interval.

The hosts were on top from the start as Alex Rojas and Josh Booth combined well to give Liam Benneyworth an early strike which went just wide of the Scarborough upright.

Aaron Coy provided a great ball to put Josh Booth away, but his shot was well saved and then Benneyworth skimmed the bar with a pile driver.

Defender Erik Green dealt well with everything down the left flank and Taylor Karkach was on hand to head clear when Scarborough made their first real attack.

Tommy Wild was tormenting the Scarborough defence but Gainsborough unfortunately couldn’t convert as chances came and went.

At last Rojas, having an outstanding game in the centre, won a 50-50 ball and provided the perfect pass for Josh Law to score the opener.

Whenever Scarborough did get forward they found Liam Stillyards calm and assured at the centre of defence so keeper Bailey Revill was a virtual spectator.

The second half saw Scarborough, with the wind at their backs, having much more influence but Gainsborough looked in control until a superb volley direct from a corner saw Scarborough equalise.

Gainsborough continued to drive forward as first Bradley Ronnis then Booth were denied by superb saves.

Seconds later Revill in the Gainsborough goal had to keep out a stinging shot from close range.

Two brave blocks in quick succession by Taylor Karkach and Rojas were needed to keep Scarborough at bay.

Gainsborough still had plenty to offer up front however, with Rhys Holliday bringing others into the game.

Bradley Ronnis was looking to pick up the scraps and the Scarborough keeper was brought into action again.

With time nearly up Scarborough broke away and scored their second.
