Burbeary’s blast over release

The winger was let go by the club last week, in the wake of manager Simon Clark’s departure.

Having turned down an approach from North Ferriby United earlier in the season, Burbeary said he expected a similar show of loyalty.

“It came as a bit of a shock, to be honest,” he said.

“I found out when a couple of lads left voicemails on my phone asking where I’d gone, I spoke to the chairman and he told me he was cutting the wage bill.”

“It’s pretty shocking, I’ve scored 17 goals this season and they’ve released me knowing I can’t sign for anyone else.”

“They didn’t even give me the option to cut my wages, I’d have played against FC United for free to be fair.”

Burbeary has secured a week’s trial at Chesterfield this week, and said he’s had calls from a number of clubs about next season.

Although obviously still upset over his release from Worksop, he refused to rule out ever returning.

“You can never say never, you don’t burn bridges, but I would have liked to have been treated a bit more professionally.”

“I stood by Worksop when Ferriby came in for me and this is how I’ve been repaid.”
