Can Wongers make it three in a row?

Mickey Stones is urging his Horncastle Town side to put together the winning run which could see them move up from mid-table to title challengers.

The Wongers boss believes there is still all to play for in the Balcan Lighting Lincolnshire League, due to the top teams all being capable of taking points from one another.

“It’s not going as well as we wanted it to, results wise,” Stones said looking back at the Wongers’ season to date.

“But looking at it, we’ve had injuries and suspensions and it’s difficult to be at your best when you don’t always have your best team available.

“But it is a tougher league this year and there have been some strange results.”

The Wongers began the campaign brightly, drawing 1-1 with Brigg Town CIC and winning 3-2 at Gainsborough Trinity Reserves.

However, Saturday’s 2-0 Lincolnshire Junior Cup win at Chapel Swifts, which followed on from the 13-0 league drubbing of Spalding United Development Squad, is the first time the team have recorded back-to-back wins this season.

“We want to put a good run together and start getting a few more wins on the board,” added Stones, who is tipping current leaders Brigg and unbeaten Lincoln Moorlands Railway to be the teams to catch.

“I think that’s important because any team that is consistent and can put a run together will do well in this league.

“It’s disappointing that we haven’t got as many points as we would have liked so far, but there’s still time.

“I think Brigg and Moorlands are the favourites, but teams are taking points off each other so there are still plenty of teams in it.”

The Wongers will be looking to make it three wins on the bounce this Saturday as they return to Gainsborough for Supplementary Cup action.

Scott Lowman netted an 88th-minute winner the last time Horncastle visited Trinity’s second string.

Jac Wright and Chris Johnson were also on target that day.

The match will kick off at the Northolme at 1.30pm.
