County cup is now the '˜number one priority'

The Wongers hit the road to face Benington in round three of the county knockout competition on Saturday.

Town currently sit 10th in the Balcan Lighting Supplies Lincolnshire League following the weekend’s 5-3 reverse at Nettleham.

And with the league title looking out of reach, the Wongers are even more desperate to do well in the cup.

“It was important to us at the start of the season, even more so now with the way the league’s going,” said manager Mickey Stones.

“It’s our top priority.

“It’s a massive game for us on Saturday.”

While the Wongers are looking to get back to their best, Benington - who play in the Boston Saturday League’s Workforce Unlimited Premier Division - are still trying to get their seasn up and running.

The basement boys picked up their first point of the league season following a draw with second-bottom Skegness Town Reserves on Saturday.

However, Stones is taking nothing for granted.

“Our form in the league means we can’t just expect to turn it on in cup matches,” he added.

“It doesn’t work like that. You have to try to do your best in every game to become consistent at winning.

“It’s a potential banana skin.

“They’ll be up for it and and it won’t be a place that suits us.

“We’ve got to try to play our game and start well, the longer the game goes on the more it plays into their hands or doubts creep in.

“We lost players in the summer but replaced them with other good players.

“We’re just lacking a bit of confidence at the minute.”

The match will kick off at 1.30pm.
