Craig Elliott got an exciting buzz when he saw the goalposts going up at Boston United’s new stadium, but believes the Northolme can be a good base to begin action - if needed.

Saturday’s friendly at Gainsborough Trinity's Northolme ground doubled up as a bit of house hunting for the Pilgrims, who have the option of kicking off their campaign by groundsharing with their Lincolnshire rivals if the under-construction Jakemans Community Stadium is still awaiting the green light.“You want to play at Boston, but I’m really happy with Gainsborough, I like playing there,” said Elliott who, like a large number of his squad, are based in Yorkshire.

“It’s a good ground and good pitch. I’ve got no complaints at all.

“It’s a lot nearer for us all, which slightly helps, but there’s still that excitement about playing in this new stadium. But short term, there’s no complaints about playing at Gainsborough.”

Elliott, who last visited United’s new home a month ago, is enjoying keeping tabs on the changes down Pilgrim Way.

“There’s a lot happening on a daily basis and I’m sure a lot will have changed by the next time I go back,” he added.

“I got excited when I saw the goalposts come up. I like the sprinklers coming out the ground as well, I’m a bit weird like that.

“It’s just going to be great and we’re excited to get this squad and we want to have a successful season to start a new era.

“It’s really exciting with the new season not too far away. I want to get cracking I’m a bit jealous other teams starting their seasons this month.”

Paul Green and Jordan Burrow marked their summer arrivals with goals as the Pilgrims won 2-1 at the Northolme on Saturday.Green swept home to complete a flowing move in the first half while Burrow marked his half-time arrival by diving to head home Jay Rollins’ cross seconds after the re-start.

Ben Tomlinson pulled one back for the hosts, who had keeper Tom Jackson to thank for a number of important saves, while Jay Rollins hit the Trinity bar lat on.

“I really enjoyed it, the game had a real buzz about it,” said Elliot who was delighted to play in front of fans for the first time since March.

“It felt normal again. It’s been difficult, even the play-off games were strange and I didn’t like it.

“It felt like a proper game again and I hope things keep progressing to enable us to get bigger crowds in.”

Goals from Andi Thanoj, Rollins and Jordan Archer saw United win 3-1 in a friendly against a Hull City under 23s side last Wednesday evening.
