Dank holiday weekend for Tigers

WORKSOP Town endured a Bank Holiday weekend to forget, with a 3-3 draw at home to Ashton and 2-1 defeat at Frickley Athletic.

The results mean 15th-placed Tigers are still not mathematically safe, but relegation is highly unlikely.

Of the bottom four teams only Frickley can catch Worksop, and would need to win their three remaining fixtures - needing Tigers to lose both of theirs.

In any case Whitby, Stocksbridge and Buxton are all positioned between Tigers and the drop zone, albeit having played fewer games.

On Saturday Worksop Town took a 3-0 lead against Ashton with a Jamie Jackson double and Massiah McDonald’s goal.

But Ashton came back with three goals in the last half hour, including a 90th minute equaliser to snatch a point.

Monday’s game at Frickley saw former Worksop boss Peter Rinkcavage trying to mastermind an escape from relegation for the South Elmsall men.

And they took a 2-0 lead over Tigers inside 13 minutes.

McDonald got his third goal in as many games for Worksop with a fine solo effort, but it wasn’t enough and Simon Clark’s side slipped to their fifth defeat in seven games.

Two games remain in the 2011/12 Evo-Stik Premier season for Tigers, with the visit of Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday and a trip to high flying Hednesford Town a week after.
