Dave Frecklington’s men held their fate in their own hands going into the season finale away at the Red Rebels, but it was events elsewhere that guaranteed National League North football next season.

Worcester went down 4-2 at champions Fylde, despite having been ahead in the game, and finished the season a point and a crucial place behind Trinity, whose 19th place maintains the Holy Blues’ proud record of never having suffered relegation.

Trinity actually took the lead at Broadhurst Park through Chris Salt’s early bullet header from a corner.

But FC United levelled in the first half through Matt Wolfenden.

The hosts then went ahead 10 minutes into the second half thanks to George Thomson’s fine effort.

Four minutes later it was 3-1, Wolfenden grabbing his second before going off injured having picked up a knock in the act of scoring.

Two goals inside two minutes in the final stages, from Jerome Wright and Thomson, completed the rout.
