The central defender will compete in the second round of the competition for the first time as the Pilgrims face League One Rochdale today (KO 2pm).

While the skipper is unsure who he will partner in the heart of defence, he knows he wants to be in the hat for Monday’s draw.

“It’s the first time I’ve got this far, and I don’t want it to end yet,” he said.

“It’s a massive game for the club.”

Shiels, who scored in previous cup victories over Sutton Coldfield Town and Carshalton Athletic, was part of the Alfreton side who lost 4-1 to Football League opposition in the shape of Fleetwood Town last season.

He says lessons have been learned.

“We played Fleetwood last year and lost 4-1. The only thing I can say about that, the keyword is discipline.

“We need to be on top of our game. Three we conceded were from our corners, we need to be switched on at all times. Even when we look like we're attacking.”

Shiels also tips the National League North side to give their rivals a run for their money at Spotland.

“There's a lot of talent in our team and it’s a great chance to express ourselves and enjoy it,” he added.

“But we have players who can push on and play league football.

“I’ve got a few goals in the tournament, so long may it continue, hopefully one on Sunday as well.”
