Craig Elliott wants to see his Boston United squad given the chance to fulfil their potential - whether that's this season or next.

The Pilgrims boss has brought together a group of players he believes are good enough to win the National League North title.

But with clubs currently voting on whether or not to end the season due to funding and health fears, Elliott worries they may not get their chance this campaign.

However, the United boss told The Standard he would love to keep the group together next season if this term is declared null and void.

"Without a doubt," he said. "We've got a very good group but there's never any guarantees in football.

"I knew we'd be up there. It's not just the quality we've got - we've got a really good group behind the scenes, a great atmosphere.

"Sometimes that doesn't happen, but they're a very good group and everyone can see the talent we've got.

"We were in a prime position to be challenging for the league and I thought we would (be up there). Fingers crossed we get that chance to fulfil that."

This season's squad, currently sixth in the National League table having played as many as five games fewer than top seven rivals, are yet to play in front of a crowd at the Jakemans Community Stadium, where the Pilgrims played their first-ever game in December.

And Elliott hopes his players will get that opportunity, adding: "I think the players have seen why I brought them to the club.

"I told them how professional it was behind the scenes and what a great club it is with the chairman and people around the place.

"They've seen that. The only thing they've not seen is the fanbase.

"I've told them that's unbelievable and the atmosphere we generate, they've bot seen that yet.

"Fingers crossed they want to buy into that and get a feel of what we know is a fantastic place to play at."
