Evans pleased after late Sleaford goal

Matt Evans praised his Sleaford Town players for fighting back to secure a stoppage time equaliser at Swallownest on Saturday.

Andy Whalen’s 95th minute goal earned a point for Sleaford after they’d initially gone behind with just seven minutes of normal time remaining.

And Evans felt it was just about a fair result when speaking to the club’s media after the game.

He said: “It was probably the right outcome. I’m pleased with the way the players kept going after falling behind so late, and there were moments in the game where either team could have won it.

"It was pretty cagey at times and not great for the neutral but we’re away from home and we’ve got a point so we’re happy with that, but whether we should have won it or not I’m not sure.

"A lack of quality was evident from both teams, to be fair, and it wasn’t really a game for being able to get your foot on the ball and do much with it.

"So we asked the lads at half-time to try and speed up the play a bit and move the ball quicker, which worked to our advantage in setting some counter-attacks up, but not enough to get all three points.

"I’m pleased for Andy Whalen as he worked hard in pre-season and then had a bit of bad form but he had a bit of a reset with the development side and got some confidence back, trained with us on Wednesday and today came off the bench and made the right impact.”

Sleaford lay 16th in the UCL Division One standings after the weekend’s matches and go to Clifton All Whites in the league on Saturday, who prior to their midweek game at Sandiacre sat seven points behind Sleaford in 20th place but had three games in hand.

Evans said: “We know they’re going to be a decent team and that their pitch is good as we’ve heard a lot about it, so we’re looking forward to the chance to play on it and it’ll give us the chance to get some of our ball players on the ball to play a bit more, as well as some of the stuff we’ve had to do at Swallownest where it’s not such a great day for passing it about.”

After the Clifton game, two home matches follow on successive Saturdays against Pinxton and South Normanton.
