FA Trophy win at Witton can kickstart Boston United's season - Greene

Following Saturday’s 9-2 walloping at National League North leaders AFC Fylde, the Pilgrims boss admitted the potential banana skin of a team two divisions below them is not the ideal contest to go into.

But he believes that a positive result could give his side a much-needed confidence boost.

“It’s not the ideal game, but a game we obviously can win,” he said.

“We were poor conceding nine goals, it’s very, very poor.

“But we’ve had a reasonably good run, that’s the third defeat in 11, now we just need to get back on another good run.”

United last faced the Albs as UniBond Premier League rivals back in the 2008-09 season, which ended with Witton being relegated and the Pilgrims avoiding the drop by three points.

The last meeting between the teams was a forgettable goalless draw at York Street.

But Boston did record a vital 2-1 victory at Wincham Park earlier that campaign, Dave Farrell and Ollie Ryan on target on a day where then-manager Steve Welsh prepared his team by showing them Al Pacino’s motivational team talk from the film Any Given Sunday.

Two divisions now separate the National League North Pilgrims and Witton, who ply their trade in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division (South).

In his first three full seasons with the Pilgrims, Greene has not been knocked out of the Trophy by a team from a lower division.

The last time that happened was months before his arrival as Jason Lee’s side exited the competition following a 2-1 replay defeat at Skelmersdale, two games before his tenure was ended.
