Last Saturday’s clash between two Sleaford area sides was a crucial match in the fate of both as they continue to languish at the foot of the table.

Pointon edged ahead after brilliant build-up play between the attacking line, and debutant Martin Turner applied the finishing touch.

Tom Hill produced some outstanding stops to keep a first half clean sheet. Right back James Key put in an excellent performance, with a superb intervention to prevent a tap-in a highlight in a man of the match display.

Pointon’s lead was doubled when Russell Houlden nodded in from a corner.

Confidence was high as the third goal came following the reliable combination of Pointon’s top two. Possession was gained after good closing down from Husband and he squared to Jacquest who returned the favour for a tap-in. The unselfishness of both players was refreshing as they worked in tandem to supply rather than hunt for their own glory.

Three goals to the good and enjoying their football was a welcome sight to see – surely a first win was on the cards for the bottom side.

A substitution and a switch in formation was made to the disgruntlement of the players as they reverted to the much disliked 4-5-1.

Ten minutes later the scored read 3-3, heads dropped and there was evident confusion in the ranks as three positional changes were made.

Pointon looked a totally different side after the defensive change and it proved to be a catastrophic move with unforseeable consequences, with a further three goals condemning them to a devastating loss and the real threat of relegation on the horizon.

Pointon: Hill, Key (MoM), Bacon, Garfoot, Coville, Wilson, Cooper, Turner, Houlden, Husband, Jacquest.
