Horncastle Town 2

Spilsby 2

Horncastle welcomed the visit of high flying Spilsby, with the Wongers digging deep to come from behind to force a well-earned draw.

In front of an enthusiastic, but rain soaked crowd, Spilsby struck first; a first minute corner cleared to the edge of the Town box was skilfully converted with a right footed shot.

Town were not fazed by the early goal, with Ellis Roberts and Louis Jones taking the game to the visitors through the congested midfield.

Spilsby continued to push for a second, with Aaron Smith clearing from the Town goal line and Peter Smith making a series of quality stops. However, the pressure from the visitors led to a lightning break down the right flank and, despite Peter Smith putting a glove on to the ball, Spilsby doubled their lead.

The Horncastle players knew the next goal was key and once again took the game to the visitors, with James McKeag and Roberts pressing high to unsettle the opposition.

The Spilsby back line was finally breached. A loose ball in the box saw Connah Toulson reacting quickest to prod it into the net, taking Town into the break with only a one goal deficit.

The second half commenced with the rain still thrashing down and in a competitive derby, both teams played some quality football despite a progressively heavy pitch.

The red and whites lifted their game to another level with the majority of the action in the visitors’ half, reducing the opposition to playing on the counter-attack.

Town continued to press, with Ellis Roberts receiving the ball 25 yards from goal. Sensing an opportunity, he smartly controlled the ball, before shooting over the onrushing defenders straight into the top right hand corner of the goal.

Both teams continued to push for the win, however steadfast defending prevented any further score.

Delighted Horncastle U12 team manager Bruce Baxter commended the whole team for their fighting spirit and resolution, with lessons learnt on the training pitch transferring into match day performance. He gave special credit to goalkeeper Peter Smith, who commanded his area throughout, and a box to box performance from midfield dynamo Ellis Roberts, which earned them joint man of the match awards.

Bruce said: “This was an excellent performance in testing conditions, proving Town can do it on a cold wet morning in Horncastle. They have proved that they can go toe to toe with the best teams in the league.”
They will take their renewed confidence into Sunday’s away match at Metheringham.
