Footballers involved in a Savage match for charity

Not many of us will get the chance to say we played against Premier League stars in a live televised match - but that happened to five footballing friends this week.

Royce Patton, Ross Dryburgh, Frazer Town and brothers Ryan and Richard Callahan took on Robbie Savage’s team of all-stars as part of the Sport Relief action on Friday.

And while Ross netted twice, it wasn’t enough for victory as Savage’s team - which included former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan, hockey star Sam Qek, McFly’s Harry Judd, JB from pop group JLS, Hollyoaks actor Warren Brown and ex-Manchester City player and manager Peter Reid - triumphed 6-2.

“It was amazing, better than any of us thought it could be,” Ryan told The News.

“It was very competitive, Robbie was really going for it. He just wanted to win.”

The contest was so competitive, in fact, that Frazer found himself on the receiving end of a tough challenge from the former Wales midfielder.

“He vows to get his revenge in a rematch, unless Savage is too worried for a rematch,” Ryan added.

The contest was screened on Friday afternoon, and the team also got the chance to meet former Newcastle United keeper Shay Given, who was also fundraising as he faced 2,500 penalties in one day.

The quintet qualified to take part after entering a draw while competing the the FA People’s Cup in Nottingham.

They play regularly together in the Horncastle Leisure Leagues and also collected £200 for the cause, which was aided by the Boston Road service station and Harpars Bar.
