Gainsborough Trinity beaten by Solihull fightback

It was three goals in the opening nine minutes of the second half which secured the win for Moors in the only spell of the game when the hosts were on top.

Trinity had gone into the break ahead thanks to Marc Newsham but that was quickly forgotten by the 48th minute.

Speaking after the game, boss Steve Housham said: “First half we worked our socks off, we went with a plan, kept our shape and we played some good football. A three minute spell I think it was and we are kicking ourselves.

“The mindset kicks in, here we go again but we got one back. You can’t pass the ball around in dangerous areas, which it proved to be for the second goal. “The work rate was there in the first and in that spell in the second it wasn’t which was the disappointing thing. We were the better team on the day in the first half. We probably deserved to be two or three up at half time but we weren’t ruthless enough.”

Gainsborough manager Steve Housham made three changes to the side which were unfortunate to lose at Stockport last time out.

Adam Quinn returned to the first eleven for the first time this year after a hernia operation before Christmas as Trinity looked to tighten up at the back after conceding six against Moors a few weeks ago.

This meant Jake Picton moved into a defensive midfield role. Nathan Jarman was another absentee due to illness with Marc Newsham deputising.

Jan Budtz also returned to the side after sitting out the trip to Stockport.

The Blues began brightly and edged the opening exchanges at Damson Parkway, taking the game to the home side.

Solihull looked a shade of the side that turned up at the Martin and Co Arena, having their best chance in the 14th minute when Darryl Knights hit a half volley that Budtz acrobatically palmed away.

There were not too many chances of note in the first period but the most important one came for Trinity.

A minute after Dom Roma forced a low save out of the opposition keeper, Newsham managed to turn home after Jonathan D’Laryea turned a ball back into the box.

It was what Trinity deserved after restricting Moors to efforts from range when they had a chance.

The league leaders had to wait only three minutes of the second half to completely turn around the game.

Ryan Beswick got Solihull level after a minute of action, shooting under Budtz from inside the box.

Before Trinity had chance to regroup, they found themselves behind.

Wing back Michael Nottingham was put through in acres of space, advanced at the Trinity goal and cleverly slotted in at the near post.

Solihull went further in front nine minutes into the half. Knights advanced down the left and found Brown in the box in space to chip it over Budtz.

The two goal lead did not last for long though with the Blues pulling one back ten minutes later.

An excellent cross field ball from Liam Davis was volleyed first time into the ground by loanee Elliott Hodge and Craig Reid found the corner of the net with a header.

Blues tried to press for an equaliser but Solihull dominated possession for the remaining half hour.

Budtz made a smart save to deny Knights after a Brown cut back before Nottingham came inches away from grabbing his second, thumping the bar from 25 yards.

Ultimately Trinity laid to rest the demons of 2 weeks ago and bar the first ten minutes of the second half, looked more than capable against the league leaders.
