The 30-year-old has joined from National League North rivals Guiseley, with the Pilgrims paying an undisclosed fee for the defender.

“We need him. I’ve been after him so long and looking at (New Year’s Day’s defeat to King’s Lynn) you can see why,” Elliott said.

“He ticks all the boxes, another leader, another character, a good defender.”

Elliott attempted to bring Garner - who has previously made 138 appearances for Boston - back to York Street in the summer, but has finally got his man.

“Things have changed a bit at Guiseley and we’re happy to get that done,” added Elliott, who sees the player’s previous relationship with the club as a bonus.

“He’s a good player, that’s the main reason. But obviously it helps having been here before.

“A lot of people crumble when they come into this environment.

“I know he can play in several areas but first and foremost I see him as a centre back.”

Garner joined United in summer 2013, leaving at the end of the 2015-16 campaign to join FC Halifax Town, aiding them to promotion the following season.

Garner helped United to three top-six finishes, scoring 17 goals.
