How Gainsborough avoided relegation

Gainsborough Trinity knew they could survive in the National League North if they matched Worcester City's result on the final day of the season.

But for a time on Saturday afternoon it looked as if their worst fears might come true.

As early as the second minute City sprung a major surprise by taking the lead at champions AFC Fyld.

Chris Salt calmed Trinity’s nerves seven minutes later by nudging his side ahead at FC United of Manchester.

It got even better for Trinity’s survival hopes when Fyld led 2-1 at half-time, despite the Blues conceding an equaliser in Manchester.

However, four minutes into the second half Worcester levelled and when Trinity fell behind seven minutes later they were in the bottom three.

Fortunately they only stayed in the relegation zone for two minutes before the league leaders regained the lead against Worcester.

Trinity were still not safe though and as FC United piled on the agony with three further goals to win 5-1 it left the Blues looking for news at Fyld, knowing that an equaliser would send them down.

Five minutes from time, however, Flyd made it 4-2 and Trinity were safe.
