I take responsibility for our poor start, but I'm the man to take us back up there! Boston United boss Dennis Greene defiant in the face of fans' calls for his head

In one of his most candid interviews to date, Greene also dismissed calls for his head as ‘part and parcel’ of being a manager and promised sweeping changes ahead of Tuesday’s National League North clash against Bradford Park Avenue.

Following today’s 3-2 home defeat to FC United of Manchester - which leaves the club with six defeats from their opening eight contests and languishing in 18th place - the United boss was met by a mixed reaction as he headed for the tunnel.

While some supporters congregated to demand he leave his role, later making their feelings known to chairman David Newton, others applauded him from the pitch.

“They were shouting out something, but I’m used to that so no big deal,” Greene said.

Asked whether he felt under pressure, he added: “Not from the chairman. If the supporters want to vent their anger then it’s up to them, but the chairman’s fully supportive, he trusts me to turn it around, and that’s what we’ll continue to try to do.

“I’m sure he’s not going to listen to a few people shouting out at the end of the game.

“It’s a very small minority, but minoritioes who want to be heard are heard.

“The other ones clap us off and go home. I get so many messages from fans, good messages, keep going.”

The boos may not be what Greene wants to hear, but he added that he felt those supporters were entitled to let him know how they feel following the club’s abject start to the campaign, where they have picked up just four points from eight contests.

“It’s part and parcel of being a football manager, they pay their money, they’re entitled to moan,” he added.

“As long as it’s not ridiculously over the top and stupid then it’s water off a duck’s back.”

After bringing in 16 new players in the summer, and four further signings since then, three of those on loan, Greene said he must shoulder the blame for putting together a side which is far from hitting the top-five finishes he enjoyed in the previous two seasons.

He added: “It’s tough with the amount of long-term injuries we’ve got, the supporters getting how they’re getting and we’re not getting results.

“It’s really tough but I’ll take the blame.

“I’ve signed every player that’s at this football club and, at the moment, it’s not happening.

“I take the blame, if they’re not good enough I shouldn’t have signed them and shouldn’t have put them on the pitch.

“It’s absolutely my fault, but I’m the one who can do something about it.

“I’ll keep going to get through it. We just want the results to change but it’s been a horrible start to the season.”

Bradford Park Avenue will be United’s next opponents at the Jakemans Stadium on Tuesday.

A frustrated Greene also hinted that changes will be made to today’s starting XI.

“We’ll put some younger legs on, players that’ll give it a go,” he fumed.

“Today there were three or four people that need to do a little bit more.”

Defender Joe Burgess left the pitch on crutches 25 minutes into the contest.

Greene added: “He’s got a nasty gash down his calf. It left him feeling a bit fuzzy, but hopefully he’ll be alright.”
