Joe Greswell believes that suspending the football season is the correct decision, even if that means he will have managed his final game for Wyberton.

Greswell has already announced he is stepping down from his role with the Colts at the end of the season.

He had hoped to go out in style by lifting some silverware after Wyberton reached the final of the Lincolnshire Junior Cup.

But Greswell admits he thinks that chance may have gone due to more important matters, and backed the decision made by the Balcan Lighting Supplies Lincolnshire League.

“I think the league being suspended is 100 per cent the correct thing to do,” he told The Standard.

“It’s better to be safe than sorry as nobody knows how all this is going to turn out.

“I will be very surprised if we play again this season.

“If that means I’ve managed my last game then so be it.

“Some things are more important then football.”

The FA called on all football from grassroots upwards to be suspended following Government advice about dealing with the Coronavirus outbreak.

The Premier League and other competitions have initial pencilled in April 3 as a return date, although that remains to be confirmed.

“I believe we will know more at the start of April regarding if the season will start up again,” continued Greswell, who believes the best thing to do could be to call time on the campaign.

“It’s a very strange time at the moment because things are changing everyday.

“If I was in charge of the league I would be brave and call that it for the season.

“I understand that teams have worked hard this season, getting to finals or to the top of a league, but this is far more important and is just one of those things.

“This isn’t just a Lincolnshire thing. This is a worldwide problem and in a league where you can’t get relegated and don’t have to win the league to go up, safety has to come first.”

Greswell’s final game in charge could be last Saturday’s 6-1 defeat to Hykeham in the Supplementary Cup.
