International football was 'surreal' but made me proud, says Boston United's former Republic of Ireland midfielder Paul Green

Boston United summer signing Paul Green says his time as an international footballer felt 'surreal' but left him brimming with pride.

The 37-year-old has arrived at the Jakemans Community Stadium after aiding Crewe Alexandra win a place in League One last season.

The former Leeds United and Derby County man is now concentrating on securing his fifth career promotion with the Pilgrims.

Green has returned to non-league for the first time since 2003, and there have been plenty of crazy experiences in between, non more so than turning out for the Republic of Ireland.

He earned 21 caps between 2010 and 2014, making one appearance at Euro 2012 in a 4-0 defeat to eventual champions Spain in Poland.

"It was a bit surreal to be honest. I never ever thought I'd get to play for my country," confessed Green, who also played internationally against the likes of Sweden, Russia, Wales, Slovakia and Poland.

"It was a proud moment for myself and my family, with my grandad being Irish.

"It was a big moment in my life. I cherished every moment and loved every moment.

"The standard at that level is ridiculous. Even the lower-ranked countries, the touches are unreal. There were never any easy games.

"But I enjoyed the experience and it was great to be around some great players as well."

After going through international team talks delivered by former AC Miulan, Juventus and Bayern Munich manager Giovanni Trapattoni, Green is now preparing for pre-match prep from Craig Elliott, the midfielder equally as eager to get started.

"I've not really encountered his team talks yet but I'm looking forward to working under him," Green said of his neighbour back in Pontefract.

With the National League North campaign not getting underway until October, Green knows matches will come thick and fast this term - something he's more than used to experiencing.

"Even at Crewe last season, we never knew when the season would finish," he said.

"We had to keep ticking over and you couldn't have a break. I've probably had a week or two off, that's it this year. I'm ready to go again.

"There was a lot of Saturday -Tuesday games in the Football League.

"I'm used to it and looking forward to getting back into it. I'm looking forward to some more minutes under my belt."
