Joy as Town extend their unbeaten run

DINNINGTON Town boss Steve Toyne praised his side’s performance in the 3-2 win over Teversal on Saturday.

Goals from Matt Smith, Liam Cartledge and Jon Roper secured victory and extends Town’s unbeaten run to eight games.

Speaking to the Guardian, Toyne said: “It was a battle but in the last two games we could have scored more with a bit more luck.”

“We’ve scored three goals away from home and we should win when we score three away.”

“I’m delighted. We are getting the ball down and playing football - it’s good to watch and we appreciate the away support.”

The deadlock was broken on 12 minutes when Smith lobbed the ball into the net from a Cartledge assist.

The home side equalised later on in the first half when Greg Tobin latched onto a loose ball to score after Andy Thornton had saved.

The two teams went into half-time all square at 1-1 but it was Town who looked the most threatening after the break.

Town got their reward through Cartledge who headed a James Roper corner into the net.

Jon Roper, on his return to the first team after a thigh strain, then crashed a 40-yard effort against the crossbar.

And, against the run of play, Olly Wood popped up to draw Teversal level once more before Jon Roper bagged the winner for Town just after the hour-mark.

“It’s been a long time since we have gone on a run like this,” said manager Toyne.

“We will take each game as it comes but our relegation fears have been banished.”

“We are now looking up rather than over our shoulders.”

Town welcomed back Simon Mirfin after a prolonged injury and also drafted Andrew Thornton into the team to replace Luke Hands in goal.

“He played for us many, many years ago, just after the war I think,” said Toyne.

“He got on better as the game went on and ended it looking like his former self.”

“We’ve had goalkeeper problems this season but I can’t play 16 and 17-year-old lads in the Northern Counties leagues, it’s backfired on us before and I wasn’t willing to put them through it again.”

Toyne is hopeful Luke Hands will be available for selection in the next couple of weeks.
