Table-topping Skegness Town are back in action tonight (Wednesday) when they travel to high-flying Grimsby Borough in the county cup quarter-finals.

The seasiders had been knocked out of the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy by Barton Town on penalties after letting a 3-0 lead slip at the Vertigo Stadium on November 12.

However, Barton fielded an ineligible player on that evening and have been removed from the competition.

The Lilywhites have been reinstated and travel to the Bradley Football Development Centre, near Grimsby, to take on last season’s NCEL Division One champions Borough (KO 7.45pm).

The Wilderness Boys, as they are known, entertain Nathan Collins’s men on the back of a 1-0 win over AFC Mansfield on Saturday.

This result, witnessed by a crowd of 56, was secured by a solitary Joshua Sunter goal and lifted Borough to second in the Premier Division.

Meanwhile Skegness were without a game after their match at East Hull was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The postponement, the only one in the league, will have frustrated the seasiders in their efforts to regain some momentum, but they remain top of their division.

Tonight’s quarter-final will no doubt rekindle memories of the Lincolnshire Junior Cup final in 2008 when Borough beat the Lilywhites at Boston United’s York Street ground.

That was the year the Grimsby side won promotion into the Northern Counties East League from the Central Midlands League.

After 11 seasons in Division One, they finally managed to step up into the top flight at the end of last season.

They earned their place in tonight’s quarter-final with a first round victory over Bottesford Town on December 4.
