Luke Shiels felt 'honoured' to be named Boston United's Player of the Year.

The skipper, who arrived in the summer from Alfreton Town, played a vital role as the Pilgrims reached the FA Cup's second round as well as harbouring promotion dreams when the campaign was put on hold.

He came out on top in the fans' vote for the Turnbull Building and Plumbing Supplies Player of the Year, with midfielders Brad Abbott and Andi Thanoj joint second.

"I was honoured to be voted the Player of the Year by the fans," said Shiels, who made 39 appearances and scored four goals.

"I'm not a massive fan of individual awards in a team sport, but it was a good feeling.

"Coming in for my first season, as captain as well, to a big club, there was a few nerves and a bit of pressure.

"I knew I had to get my head down, work hard and do what the gaffer wanted me to do. It's been a good season."

Twelve months ago Shiels won the Fans' Player of the Year award at Alfreton, before making the switch to York Street with teammate Tom Platt, who was named this season's Players' Player of the Year by the United squad.

"I think it showed it was the right move for myself and Platty," Shiels said, looking back at the season.

"When I was talking to the gaffer regarding coming to Boston he asked me about Platty.

"Obviously, I said what a good payer he is and his award is deserved.

"But I've been with him at Alfreton and Harrogate before that, it does feel like he's following me around."
