Nostell Miners Welfare 4 Skegness Town 2

Table-topping Skegness Town slipped to their second league defeat of the season at Nostell Miners Welfare after conceding at three set pieces.

It was a disappointing result for the Lilywhites, especially as they had taken an early lead, but they have a poor record against the Wakefield area side.

Indeed this was their third consecutive defeat at the hands of Nostell.

It started so positively. Liam Parker met a cross from Josh Morrall and looped his header over home keeper Dan Rusling to give the seasiders an 11th-minute lead.

But midway through the first half Callum Ward struck for the home side to make the interval score 1-1.

So there was all to play for going into the final 45 minutes and both sides would have recognised the importance of the next goal.

It came from the Welfare, with home skipper Rhys Meynell firing home from the penalty spot just before the hour, after Parker was adjudged to have fouled in the area.

Town were not without their chances and Rusling was at full stretch to deny the visitors.

The Welfare’s Liam Owen missed a golden opportunity to extend the home side’s lead when he cleared the cross bar with his shot, but 15 minutes from the end the two-goal advantage was achieved.

Town failed to deal with Rich Collier’s corner kick and Luke McCrum marked his full debut for the club by heading past James Lambley in the Skegness goal.

The Lilywhites continued to probe, looking for a way back into the game, but in the 79th minute they conceded from another set piece. Jack Owen found the top corner with a 25-yard free kick.

Gary King continued his rich vein of scoring with a late consolation, but it was not enough to get the visitors back into the reckoning.

TOWN: J. Lambley, L. Lambley (Humble 86), Norburn, Parker, Nichol, Clarke (Smith 75), Rayner-Mistry, Broughton, King, Davison, Morrall.

Town were due to host Barton Town in the Lincs Senior Trophy last night (tuesday).

Liam Parker put Town ahead, but later conceded a penalty.
