McGhee: Early goal was crucial in Sleaford defeat

Jamie McGhee was again left frustrated by his Sleaford Town side’s display as they were beaten 3-1 at Dronfield Town on Saturday.

Having fallen behind inside 20 seconds and being two behind midway through the first-half, the Greens never recovered and despite Dion Tansey-Potter reducing the arrears, Dronfield secured all three points with Sleaford’s James Twigg also sent off for a second bookable offence late on.

And McGhee told the club’s media it was another disappointing day as Sleaford now sit just one point above the UCL Division One relegation zone.

He said: “It was another game where we didn’t get going and we found ourselves 1-0 down in 20 seconds and gave ourselves a mountain to climb.

“It’s a bitter pill to swallow at the moment, obviously the confidence isn’t very good at the minute, but we’re trying our best to lift it. But going a goal down after twenty seconds makes it hard work.

"We were then 2-0 down to a harsh penalty decision but it was a really nice finish from Dion to get us back in the game after a good bit of play. We’ve missed a one-on-one soon afterwards and had another shot saved where in both cases our players rushed their finishes.

"I thought James Twigg was a bit unlucky to get sent off as he did well today but it was two yellows and the second one was after we’d had a good spell in the second-half, so we need to address the discipline side of things because we are in a dogfight and we’ll need everybody so we can’t be having players missing through suspension.”

Sleaford now prepare to head to already-relegated Rainworth MW this weekend, who sit bottom of the table on 12 points.

McGhee added: “It’s got to be a positive one, it doesn’t matter where they are in the league – the mindset has to be right to go and win the game.

"If we turn up fearful of losing the game then we will do so we have to be positive.”
